ATG Europe & HIT Win the Ex-Vessel Remote Handling System

ATG Europe & HIT win the ex-vessel remote handling system (EVRHS-001) with SCK CEN to support the MYRRHA project.

ATG Europe and Heemskerk Innovative Technology are proud to announce their selection to work on the EVRHS-001 assignment with SCK CEN, within a framework agreement, following our recent public tender winning for the provision of general engineering services in support to the preliminary design phases of the MYRRHA reactor’s primary systems as well as the balance of plant (BOP) systems.

The Ex-vessel Remote Handling System (EVRHS) is destined to support the MYRRHA reactor in ensuring a safe and remotely controlled access to various tasks in the reactor hall and associated rooms, especially when hazards such as radiation prevent direct human intervention. The range and type of tasks that the EVRHS will perform will be very broad, ranging from moving and measuring components to executing complex maintenance and inspections operations.

ATG and HIT have been tasked in producing the EVRHS’s design basis, define its remote handling strategy as well as its conceptual design, identify and develop associated task descriptions and their procedures.

HIT will ensure the technical leadership of the project, providing crucial support as experts in innovative high-tech projects in the field of robotics and mechatronics and working closely with ATG EngineeringLab. ATG Europe will provide its industrial partners support in the areas of project management, consortium management as prime contractor, on-site technical support, office liaisons and cost engineering.

MYRRHA Project

The MYRRHA (Multi-purpose hYbrid Research Reactor for High-tech Applications) project is run by SCK CEN and is the world’s first large scale Accelerator Driven System (ADS) that consists of a subcritical nuclear reactor driven by a high-power linear accelerator. With the subcritical concentration of fission material, the nuclear reaction is sustained by the particle accelerator only. Turning off the proton beam results in an immediate and safe halt of the nuclear reactions.
“The kick-off of the activities in support of the MYRRHA project is an important milestone for our company on its path of consolidation of our involvement in the Big Science and Nuclear Energy domain”, says Mr. Gian Carlo Coletta, CEO of ATG Europe. “We are looking forward to supporting the SCK CEN organization together with our industrial partners from the Conceptual Design to the Feasibility and Design Verification Phases and paving the road towards the Basic Design Verification of the reactor”.
